I don’t always carry a purse. When I'm in and out of my car, running errands, I really only need to have my wallet with me. That, and my phone. My wallet is so huge, it can easily fit the iPhone 4S. More like a wristlet than a wallet. Put the phone in the wallet, hang the wallet from your wrist, off you go. However, after upgrading to the iPhone 6 Plus, that didn’t work anymore. The phone is too damn big, so I had to get creative. If the phone didn’t fit in my wallet… maybe the wallet would fit in my phone??
First off, I had to slim the whole thing down a couple of inches. Too many store loyalty cards, too many receipts I didn't need, all in all just too much George Costanza. I dumped all the loyalty cards in the Stocard app, and now my rewards cards live in a drawer at home. If a store won't accept the on-screen bar code on my phone, too bad for them. I’m just not going to shop there any longer.Get with the program, people!
Now with only a couple of cards left, I had to find the perfect wallet case. Shouldn’t be too difficult, right? Wrong. There are a gazillion cheap iPhone wallet cases for sale everywhere, but none of them seemed to work for me. I am using my phone a lot in the car, where I attach it to a magnetic holder lodged in the car stereo's CD slot. A wallet case just wouldn't work for that. Also, when holding this big phablet to my ear while making a phone call I already look like a dork, and adding a folded over wallet case to the mix would make make it worse.
What I needed was a wallet with a detachable phone case. Something that would hold a few cards and let me remove the phone to use in the car, or hold to my ear. At first, I thought I found the perfect case when I stumbled over Twelvesouth's newly launched Book Book case for the iPhone 6. A wallet plus removable shell case, sounds good, right?
Not so fast...
First of all, the Book Book case it’s ugly as sin. Sure, it's a matter of personal taste. Some people love that their phones looks like a book from the turn of the century. But the whole case just doesn't seem right. She shell case is attached to the wallet with some sort of plastic connector that you have to line up just right to hook in. There's a chance the hooks my snap off, or catch on something. And of course, its shell case has corresponding holes in it. That's not a pretty look. I suppose I could have dealt with all of that. But what I couldn't stand was the cut out for the camera in the wallet. Wait… a wallet case that looks like an old book … with a whole corner missing? To order this case would have been a compromise, and I wasn't ready to compromise just yet.
Enters the Dock Artisan Sport Wallet Combo Case
My search continued. I googled to the ends of the earth, where they don’t speak English anymore, and back. Ultimately I found Dock Artisan, and they're just around the corner, in California. Dock Artisan makes a magnetic wallet combo case. Yep. A 4-slot-credit card wallet that folds open and has a magnet embedded inside. It comes with a snap-on iPhone shell case that has hidden metal strips, and together, they are the perfect combo. The magnet is strong enough to keep the shell case in place even when the wallet is open, but lets you detach the phone case from the wallet so quickly, it’s like magic. The wallet has a elastic band closure that is out of the way when you don’t need it, and there when you do. Just like a Moleskine notebook. So handy. The wallet holds 4 credit cards comfortably (the version for the iPhone 6 holds 3), and has two larger compartments for bills or receipts. Now I hear you wince “Credit cards and magnets… that can’t be good!”. Well, my cards have been in there for a while now and they’re fine. Maybe those are new types of magnets. No wait. Maybe it’s new types of credit cards… who knows.
Let’s talk about prices, and value for money. The Dock Artisan case for the iPhone 6 Plus costs $ 80. That’s a lot of cash. But it is flawlessly crafted from soft and supple leather, with no stitch out of place, and it just looks great. I first ordered a vintage brown case, but then I realized that the black would probably a much better fit for me. Less hipster, more casual elegance. Initially I was deterred from ordering black because it just doesn't look as nice on the pictures on their website, but I shouldn't have been worried:
The black leather is stunning and every bit as nice as the "vintage brown", soft and strong and not too glossy. I suppose it's just a personal preference, really. Both versions are lined with super soft microfiber cloth. I mistook it for suede, that's now nice it feels. The included shell case has large cutouts on the top, the bottom and the sides where the buttons are. I’m not a big fan of the cutouts, but in the grand scheme of things is something I can forgive, because the rest of the case is so well made. A soft-touch, low profile polycarbonate shell with enough stability that even without the wallet, your phone is well protected. (It even comes with a screen protector, but I don’t use that because using a screen protector on a screen like that, it’s blasphemous.)
The Dock Artisan Leather Sport Wallet Combo Case has a long name and comes in two colours: vintage brown and black. The case looks fantastic and now that I've been using it for a while, it turns out that it is exactly what I needed.
I am giving away the brown version for the iPhone 6 Plus, which I used for a few days before getting the black case. If you want the vintage brown case, please fill out the form below stating which cards you would put in its 4 card slots (for example: A Visa card, a Mastercard, Library Card, Drivers License, Bus Pass, and so forth.)
